Our Vision

‘Different generations will work together and use their skills and confidence to take an active role in shaping and managing their future. The East Manchester Community will have respect for themselves, confidence in their neighbours and the ability to work closely with all agencies to realise their collective dreams, ambitions and aspirations, securing prosperity and a decent quality of life’.

Who we are

East Manchester’s New Deal for Communities Programme was established in 1999 when more than £51 million pounds of Government Funding was secured to achieve major improvements to the area. This together with a further £25 million of Single Regeneration Budget will be targeted specifically in the Beswick, Openshaw and Clayton area. Local residents played an integral role in securing the funding and following the successful bid they decided to call the programme Beacons for a Brighter Future.

What we do

The Beacons area was chosen to receive this money not just because it was one of the most deprived communities in the country but also because it has a number of strengths too. Working with residents, the Beacons programme has identified key priority area:

  • Crime, Community Safety and Anti-Social Behaviour
  • Housing and Neighbourhood Management
  • Young People
  • The Environment
  • Employment, Education and Training
  • Health and Well Being

Regular meetings involving key organisations and local people take place to discuss key issues relating to these themes and specific projects are developed to resolve them.
